Critique#2

This painting Fox Hunter, by Kim Hunter from Vancouver Canada shows many things. This painting shows two people out in a field hunting foxes. The title of the image is fox hunt. In the painting fox hunt, Kim Hunter focuses strongly on color, foreground, and realism to display the deep curiosity of the dogs and the people.

The color shows the time of season that it is which is autumn. The colors all blend in to match each other except for the one dog that appears to not belong to the group. The dog that is holding a red disk appears to not belong to the others because he is looking a different direction and he is holding a frisbe in his mouth. His colors and size also show that he is not the same breed as the other dogs that appear to be hunting dogs. The color also tells me that it appears to have been a dry season because the grasslands are rather brown and there are patches of dirt showing.

The foreground also displays curiosity because of the direction the dogs and the people are looking. All of the dogs appear to be sniffing the air in the same direction. This means that they have caught a scent of a fox and one appears to be barking. When the people get the signal from the dogs they immediately look in the direction they are pointing at. The only dog that is not curios is the one with a frisbe because he could be returning it back to his owner. The foreground relates to the background because in the foreground the people are pointing off in the same direction as the dogs are. In the background there is an animal running towards the woods which is what the attention may be directed towards.
The realism of the photo is shown in many different ways. The way the dogs appear to be searching for their target relates to realism because in real life that is how the dogs would be acting. Another way that the photo shows realism is because of the setting in which the people and the dogs are in. The people and dogs are in the outdoors which is where they would be if they were fox hunting. Another way the photo uses realism is because the hunting season does mainly take place in the autumn months and in the painting the author did in fact draw the scenery in the autumn months. Another way it is used is in the way the horse’s posture is. The black horse is being pulled on by its rider and in response the horse is pulling its mouth back and picking its legs up. The black and white dog also shows realism because he has no interest what so ever in what the other dogs are interested in and that is because the black and white dog is not a hunting dog. This is how realism is displayed in the painting.

The color shows the time of year that it is and the differences in the dogs. The foreground displays the curiosity of the animals and the people.
